Macau Casinos - The Venetian Macau

The Venetian Macau is design to shock and awe anyone who visits. The sheer scale of it is unbelievable, and the amount of money that must have been thrown into the project is astounding. The main entrance building is designed like the Doge Palace, and there is even the Rialto Tower, Bridge, etc. It is like the whole of Venice has been shrink-wrapped and brought to Macau. That said, the quality of construction is very good – it doesn’t look and feel like a cheap replica. Most of the main facades are clad in what looked like real stone, and the quality of finish is impressive.

At night the lighting effects are quite spectacular.

As you enter the main lobby, you are suddenly confronted with the St. Peter’s Basilica, and the hallway that leads to the Casino is also modeled after the famous cathedral in Rome. Everything is painted on of course, but the effect can be quite mesmerizing for a while. However, the quality of the interior is no where near that of the exterior.

The Casino has a huge shopping centre attached to it, and this is also modeled after The Venetian in Las Vegas. The internal shopping arcades are designed like Venetian streets complete with water-filled canals. There are even gondolas with gondoliers for hire. There doesn’t seem to be any clear demarcation of the shopping zones, and it can get a bit disorienting as it starts to look the same everywhere.

They employ many entertainers who perform and entertain around the shopping centre dressed in period costume. For me they are the most endearing part of the whole Venetian experience. Nothing beats the warmth of real people.

China in the Springtime

Filed in archive A World Away by Greg Cruey on April 29, 2009
My friend Sara Naumann has a good set of resources available on China in the Springtime. According to Sara, "It's a great time to visit China. Bring your rain gear and enjoy mild temperatures and fewer tourist crowds."

Sara has a long list of things to do and places to go this time of year in China. It's a good time to hike the Great Wall. Hangzhou's lakes and gardens are beautiful this time of year. Most of the major cities have pleasant enough whether that you can tour the back streets and dine outside.

My favorite suggestion: Watch the rice grow in Guilin...

Guilin, China

Search of a Cool Summer: Kunming, China pictures

During the 52 days between June 20th and August 10th it was never warmer than 80F degrees in Kunming in 2002. The temperature didn't reach 75 degrees on 24 of those days. Temperatures at night fell below 65 degrees on all but eight nights. About half of those days saw rain.

Kunming is no stranger to tourism. Almost a million foreign visitors a year come to the city. Another two million Chinese citizens vacation in the city each year. And with good reason. The city's history stretches over two millenniums. During the 19th Century it was a gateway for trade between China on the one hand and the French and British colonial powers in Burma and Vietnam on the other.

Kunming is something of a garden city. The city's botanical garden is worth at least a day.

flickr_4990972.jpg

Orchids, azaleas, camellias and much more fill the garden. The botanical garden includes over 4000 species of tropical and subtropical flora.

Adding to the scenic feel of Kunming, the city sets on the edge of Dianchi Lake. The lake is about 220 square miles, making it one of China's largest inland bodies of water. Sailing on the lake is popular, especially on nights when the moon is out. A large forest reserve borders the lake and can be seen from the city.

Not far outside the city on the shore of Dianchi Lake is the Yunnan Ethnic Village. The "village" is a large ethnic theme park with displays on each of Yunnan's 26 tribal minorities. Some of the most colorful and enchanting cultures in the world are on display in the Village.

A common day trip from Kunming is the Stone Forest. This collection of interesting natural rock formations is a little over 50 miles from the city. Daily organized tours make the Stone Forest easy to visit. A shorter trip is Mingfeng Mountain. Mingfeng is a mixture of scenic beauty, gardens, and historical sites - including the Golden Temple. The temple is home to China's largest bronze-domed hall.

Macau Casinos - Wynn Macau

Las Vegas casinos have moved into Macau in a big way, and casino magnate Steve Wynn’s Wynn Macau seems to be the most daring, occupying a strategic area right opposite The Lisboa. It is like an open challenge to Stanley Ho – “Bring It On !”

The design of the hotel and casino is a direct copy from the one in Las Vegas. The hotel itself is a long curved building with a champagne-coloured glass façade. The main entrance is fronted by a huge circular pool where a sound, light and fountain show is staged every evening.

Architecturally this casino is one of the least interesting - it is a hotchpotch of different styles. The hotel itself is a sleek modern design, but the entrance is Classical. The podium which occupies a whole city block is also pseudo-Classical or "American Colonial", and at the back is another curved tower which mirrors the hotel block but is much taller and symmetrical in plan.

Travel and Holiday Guides for the Andros - Greece.

We went on holiday to the Greek Island of Andros which is located in the Cyclades group in May 2004. There is no commercial airport on the island, instead you have to fly into Athens and then take the 120 minute or so ferry ride from Rafina over to Gavrio - cost around 9 Euros.

We found this Greek Island really nice to visit for our walking holiday with lovely scenery for sightseeing and touring, loads of wildlife, the usual (if not better than usual) friendliness from the islanders, and also one of the cheapest Greek Islands we have been to from the point of daily costs i.e. food/wine.
In our view up to now the ultimate Greek Island for wildlife/scenery/old buildings/churches and particularly the paths and tracks available for walking (my wife particularly loves walking along walled paths/moni-paths) had to be Paxos but the large but quiet Greek Island of Andros has to be a close second.

Boothbay Harbor Maine

Aside for being a popular destination for lobster and seafood restaurants throughout the world, Bootbay Harbor is also known as “The Boating Capital of New England.” Hence, going on a scenic boat tour is the first thing in your to do list during your stay in Boothday Harbor Inn. There are 25 boat trips daily that tour the nearby islands.

The highly recommended place to visit near Boothbay Harbor is the Damariscotta Lake State Park - a good place to go swimming. The place isn't overcrowded during weekdays. In the nearby island is a home of a very nice beach called Pemaquid with warm water compared to other beach in Maine. The calm and lovely views of this beach resort are perfect for you and your kids.

Here you will discover the historic side of Boothbay Harbor that full of museums. Tourist can enjoy educational and historical part of the town. A one-day tour on Antique Railway Village is enough to discover the history behind this place. Part of the village are old automobiles, a museum, tractor pulls, model and full size train. Another museum you must see is located in downtown the Boothbay Region Historical Society. It is just a small yet informative museum. Seeing their large collection and photographs, you can imagine the look of the town before it became a large tourist destination.

You can also enjoy visiting Burnt Island Lighthouse. It is a five-acre island operated by Maine Department of Marine Resources. From the port of BoothBay Harbor, this lighthouse is just a one mile away. After the successful attempt of restoring this lighthouse it is now an educational spot in Maine.

Lastly, don't forget to visit the Maine State Aquarium. So what is it about this aquarium that seems to be enchanting all? For one thing, it's all the lobsters. Your kids will be amazed with different sizes and colors of lobsters and wide variety of sea creatures they will find here. The Aquarium was built in 1993, and it looks like the actual rocky coast of Maine.

Ubud Is A Town In Bali

Ubud Is A Town In BaliUbud In Bali

Ubud is a town on the Indonesian island of Bali in Ubud District, located amongst rice paddies and steep ravines in the central foothills of the Gianyar regency. One of Bali's major arts and culture centres, it has developed a large tourism industry.
Ubud has a population of about 8,000 people, but it is becoming difficult to distinguish the town itself from the villages that surround it.
The main street is Jalan Raya Ubud (Jalan Raya means main road), which runs east-west through the center of town. Two long roads, Jalan Monkey Forest and Jalan Hanoman, extend south from Jalan Raya Ubud. Puri Saren Agung is a large palace located at the intersection of Monkey Forest and Raya Ubud roads. The home of Tjokorda Gede Agung Sukawati (1910-1978), the last "king" of Ubud, it is now occupied by his descendants and dance performances are held in its courtyard. It was also one of Ubud's first hotels, dating back to the 1930s.
The Ubud Monkey Forest is a sacred nature reserve located near the southern end of Jalan Monkey Forest. It houses a temple and approximately 340 Crab-eating Macaque (Macaca fascicularis) monkeys.
Ubud tourism focuses on culture, yoga and nature. In contrast to the main tourist area in southern Bali, the Ubud area has forests, rivers, cooler temperatures and less congestion although traffic has increased dramatically in the 21st century. A number of smaller "boutique"-style hotels are located in and around Ubud, which commonly offer spa treatments or treks up Ubud's mountains.
The Moon of Pejeng, in nearby Pejeng, is the largest single-cast bronze kettle drum in the world, dating from circa 300BC. It is a popular destination for tourists interested in local culture, as is the 11th century Goa Gajah, or 'Elephant Cave', temple complex.
