Eating in Kuching - Breakfast at Seng Yuen Food Centre

I have been to this coffeeshop many times before, but never posted on it. It is about time I thought. This coffee shop is famous for its bak kut teh and kueh chap. It used to be easy to get good bak kut teh in Kuching, but somehow many of the good stalls have closed or lost their touch. This remains one of the better ones.

The style of the bak kut teh here is more of the clear soup type. If you like the thick and heavy soup of the Klang Style, then this is not for you. Slight hints of Chinese herbs and pepper, sweetness of the pork ribs, quite nice and tasty.

I also like the porridge here. As far as I know, this is the only place in Kuching which serves Pork and Cuttlefish Porridge - a common and popular dish in Singapore. This is a thick porride, topped with minced pork cooked in soy sauce, and cuttlefish is added to give it the extra “umami” taste. A dish that is simple yet satisfying.

Seng Yuen is located at Sekama Road, near the junction to Pending Road. It is not difficult to find - just behind the Hong Leong Bank block at the corner of Pending and Sekama Road.

Santa Cruz Beach and Boardwalk, California

Tanning in the sun at Santa Cruz Beach, California
If you ask anyone who’s been to Santa Cruz, they’ll probably tell you it’s the Boardwalk you want to see, and the beach is just a showcase. It’s always fun and takes you back in time where you can stroll along (yes, it’s actually made of boards) and people watch, or take in the beautiful, but cool Pacific Ocean, or buy something special at one of the many shops that line the boardwalk
Get crazy and you’ll end up riding the rides here. There are ferris wheels, and roller coasters, and almost everything in between. It’s a kaleidoscope for the senses and the dark blue waters that come ashore on this powdery tan sand have been doing so for eons. The kids will want to kick up and play in the waves, but you can lay back and listen.
Playing on Santa Cruz beach, CaliforniaGranted, you’ll need to get yourself to the California coast, but once here you’ll find these beaches much less crowed than the beaches at top Caribbean destinations, or the East Coast for that matter. And one thing you can’t forget is that the water temperature here will take your breath away at times. It can get pretty chilly, even in mid-Summer. Locals have wetsuits, and you may find a local surf shop that rents them. You’ll be glad you had it on if you plan to spend any time at all in the water.
But you can’t really snorkel here because you won’t see much, and Santa Cruz Beach area is really where the cruise ships come in to dock. If you want to snorkel here, try La Intrega Beach. You may not see too much, but it’s always fun to say that you did snorkel off the California coast. There are some nice rocks on that beach with some fish, and you’ll always see your share of sea grass. Make sure you take a partner to keep tabs.
Speaking of water temperatures, swimming may be out of the question if you don’t have something to keep you warm. Santa Cruz Beach is a beach of contrasts. For example, you can set your beach umbrella up on the sand and the sun will warm you. Most beaches are the same, but this beach is one of contrasts. The Arctic Stream flows right down the California Coast, and waters can get in the 50′s! That’s quite a contrasting beach – sun and heat and water and cool… all in one place.
The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk
How can we mention the beach without mentioned what really made the beach famous? Well, we can’t. The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk has been enjoyed by tourist for over 100 years. In fact, the Giant Dipper roller coaster was built there in 1924 and hails and one the funnest wooden coasters in America. Down on the boardwalk there are tons of small shops and galleries; something for the whole family.
Santa Cruz Beach BoardwalkNow we found that both the beach here and especially the boardwalk area can become very crowded during the weekends in summer. Plan ahead. Arrive early or come during weekdays.
Free entertainment on weekends and tons of rides (did I say that already?) Our favorite is the Sky Glider that runs from one end of the boardwalk to the other with fantastic views of Monterey Bay.

    Hong Kong, China nightline.
Yep, you heard that right: former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin will travel to Hong Kong for her first commercial speaking engagement, a keynote address at the CLSA Investors’ Forum September 23. Given that foreign policy was a soft spot for Palin during the 2008 campaign, this will give her a chance to boost her foreign policy cred (and she’ll be able to see Taiwan from her hotel room).
It could also boost her business cred, while she’s at it, depending on what her speech focuses on…”Our keynote speakers are notable luminaries who often address topics that go beyond traditional finance such as geopolitics,” a CLSA spokeswoman said in a statement. Past luminaries include Bill Clinton, Al Gore, and Alan Greenspan.

    Holidays to Thailand

    Holidays to Thailand
    Holidays to Thailand
Holidays to Thailand Central & Eastern Regions
Any holiday to Thailand should include a visit to nearly 400 kilometers of eastern shoreline which harbors pristine natural beaches and some of the World's best hotels. Pattaya, a city popular as emerging playground of Asia, is the centerpiece of eastern corridor. Farther away lays the majestic and less visited Ko Chang National Park that has adorned almost every major publication with its mind-boggling beauty. If your idea of a vacation is slightly more sophisticated then head towards western coast where resorts of Cha-am and Hua Hin provide word class luxury amid plentiful picturesque spots and peaceful atmosphere. For more adventurous, the northwest region of Kanchanaburi offers extreme natural setting in form of caves, waterfalls, mountains, wildlife sanctuaries and its star attractions, the indigenous tribes.
    North & Northwest
Chiang Mai on the outskirts of northern border is truly the most wonderful experience on holidays to Thailand. Areas around Chiang Mai are considered to be the birthplace of Thai civilization. Its location in the middle of highland attracts visitors to enjoy true Thai hospitality and a sense of cultural and adventure travel, seldom present elsewhere. From white water rafting, elephant rides, bamboo sailing and ATV runs to balloon safari and jungle trials, the city has everything on offer. To experience even more authenticity, head off to Isan. It is an arid plateau in northeast, covering nearly two thirds of the entire country. Although Isan is still a relatively poor region but for tourists it is the best kept secret of Thailand. Three of the most well preserved National Parks, Khao Yai, Phu Kradung and Phu Rua are situated here. These Parks are at close proximity to the hand weaving centers of Thailand, Khorat and Khon Kaen. Tourists often relish the economical hand woven silk.

Kuching Hotels - Grand Margherita Hotel

The first International hotel in Kuching was the Holiday Inn. It occupied a building which was purpose-built for it next to the riverbank. Being the first International standard hotel in town, many Kuchingites have fond memories of the establishment, as it used to be the only place to get a decent Western meal. The coffeehouse - Orchid Garden, was a very popular local institution.

About a year ago the Holiday Inn was re-branded as Grand Margherita under the owner's management, after extensive renovations of the lobby and coffeehouse. The design is now more up-to-date, but some people might miss the old "ethnic" feel of the hotel. The new design follows the trend of modern clean-line aesthetics. I can't help feeling that the new design is a bit soul-less. There aren't enough visual cues to remind guests that this is a hotel in Kuching, one of the most interesting historic cities in South-East Asia.

    External view of the hotel.

    Reception area.

Grand Margherita is very well located at the Golden Triangle in Kuching. It is right next to the Kuching Waterfront which connects to Main Bazaar and Gambier Street - the historical part of Kuching town. After the renovation the hotel feels fresh, and yet still retains a bit of its original charm. It is a good option for both business and leisure travelers.

This 28,000 square foot water park features slides and inner-tube rides as well as wave pools and a tamer kid's area. Located at Eagle Beach.

Best Five Beach Destination on St. Barths

For a small island, St. Barths has a wide variety of beaches, all of which are open to the public and all of which are lined with beautiful white sand. Here you'll find the typical Caribbean resort beaches with their hotels, restaurants and watersports centers, but also some hidden strands inhabited mostly by locals -- or nobody at all. St. Barths also is one of the Caribbean's most popular destinations for topless and nude sunbathing, so even if you're not prepared to show it all, be prepared to see it all.

Shell BeachBest Five Beach Destination on St. Barths

Shell Beach is unique on St. Barths because it's the only major beach located "in town," in this case in the heart of the capital city of Gustavia. The beach has calm waters and is a welcome respite after a day spent in the shops and boutiques in town. For a little adventure, there's the opportunity to do some cliff-diving, and the Do Brazil restaurant -- co-owned by tennis legend Yannick Noah -- offers reasonably priced (for St. Barths, anyway) lunch, dinner, and cocktails by the sea.

    St Jean Beach

Best Five Beach Destination on St. BarthsThis is the most popular beach in St. Barths, thanks to its convenient location and plethora of beachfront hotels, restaurants, and other activities. Like all of St. Barths' beaches it has white sand, and the calm waters make for good snorkeling. The Eden Rock resort, built on a rocky prominence, splits the beach in two. Lay back and watch the occasional plane take off and land at the island's nearby airport.

Flamands BeachBest Five Beach Destination on St. Barths

IF you like to bodysurf or boogie-board, Flamands Beach is a great choice because of its rolling (but rarely hazardous) surf. The Hotel Ile de France and La Langouste restaurant are located on Flamands, which is one of the largest beaches on St. Barths and offers plenty of shady palm trees.

Gouveneur BeachBest Five Beach Destination on St. Barths

The beach at Gouveneur Bay has brilliant cobalt waters that are ideal for snorkeling or swimming, a fine stretch of white sand, and relatively few visitors. The beach has great views of Saba, St. Eustatius and St. Kitts, and is another popular spot for nude sunbathing.

Saline BeachBest Five Beach Destination on St. Barths

The path leading to Saline Beach is short but can be a bit tricky; however, it is well worthwhile especially if you enjoy nude sunbathing (head to the left of the path for the unofficial naturist section of the beach). There's no services or shade on the beach, however, so even if you leave your swimsuit at home be sure to bring your own food, drinks, umbrellas and chairs. Windier and a bit rougher than some other St. Barths beaches, so be careful if you swim on this unprotected beach.
